Materials and Tools

Please read the description of any piece to see what materials I used for its construction.

My maquettes are constructed using Aves Apoxie SculptSuper Sculpey, and Sculpey Firm. I also work with Monster Clay and create molds/casts from these sculpts.

My armatures consist of household aluminum foil, as well as aluminum armature wire. I paint with Cel Vinylpaints, using both an airbrush and regular brushes.

I buy my wood bases at Jo-Ann, Michael's, and AC Moore.  They are available at most local craft stores in the US.  I am not familiar with where you can purchase them internationally, but factory direct craft sells wood bases and ships internationally.

Concerning Sales

If a piece is for sale in my gallery, it will state so in the description.  If it does not mention being for sale, it was either a custom piece created for someone else or it has already been sold (or I am just not selling it!)  Please do not ask me to remake any pieces in my gallery; not only is this boring for me to do, it defeats much of the purpose of owning an original.  I do not mind sculpting the same character again, but it needs to be in a fresh light.

Check out the for sale section in my gallery to see a selection of works currently available for purchase.

A Note About Questions

I will no longer be responding to material related questions that can be answered with a simple Google search or that I have answered on this page.  I am not doing this to be mean.  I get a LOT of questions that I simply do not have the time to respond to.

If you have a questions about technique, PLEASE check my tutorials in my gallery to see that it isn't answered there first. I put a lot of time and effort into those and they explain a majority of what I do.

Group Requests

While I appreciate the motion, I do not accept requests to unthemed groups or groups with themes that are irrelevant to the particular sculpture.  Please don't take it personally if I decline your group invitation. I welcome themed group invitations, regardless of quality control.

Comments

Yes, I have comments turned off.  It is for a number of reasons, but mainly because I don't have the time to manage them.  If you need to get in touch with me, please use the contact form on my website, emilysculpts.com.

PLEASE do not submit commission inquiries through deviantArt.  I only discuss commissions via email, which can be accessed on my website.  Additionally,  I do not accept points as payment for commissions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why are you no longer taking commissions of licensed characters, aka “fan art”?

Back in November, I made the original announcement  that I will be ending fan art commissions. I have been getting a lot of questions on the matter so I thought I would make another post letting people know my reasoning behind this.

Firstly, no, I did not receive any cease and desist orders or anything like that.  While not impossible, it’s highly unlikely that something like that would happen on the relatively small scale that I have worked.  Still, just because I probably would never get in trouble doesn’t make me feel better about creating unlicensed sculptures.

That being said, I never expected to be getting so many fan art based sculpture commissions.  When I first started taking commissions again back in 2012, I was commissioned for a Pokemon sculpture, of the character Koffing.  Ever since then, I have been getting more requests for licensed characters and less requests for the original characters and fantasy creatures that I love.

When I exhibited at Designer Con last November and saw all the amazing originality and storytelling of attending artists, it made me realize how my art has veered from the original path I had laid out for myself.  I have become better known for fan art rather than my own original creations.  It’s not what I want for myself or my art.  While I have enjoyed recreating people’s favorite characters and learning a bunch of new techniques in the process, it’s time to move onward and upward.

Ending fan art commissions is my first step in getting my business back on track in the direction I want to be going.  This year, I will be expanding my collection of original works, creating more educational material, and generally doing more of what I want to do.  I will still be taking commissions, for now, for original characters, animals, pets, and fantasy creatures.  However, the plan is to one day phase out commissions completely.

I have been told “but you would make so much more money!” and “you would be so much more popular”, in reference to fan art.  But it goes so far beyond money and popularity.  It’s about enjoying the art I create and feeling good about it.  It’s about being known for my own original ideas, not the ideas of others.  It’s about following my own path and my own dreams.  I only have so much time each day.  I want to be spending it on what I WANT to be doing, not what will make me more money/make me more popular/etc.

While I am so happy to share with my viewers and see their reactions, at the end of the day, I make art for myself.  And if I am not happy, what’s the point?  Life’s too short to not love what you do and do what you love.

(As a side note, I am not telling other people what to do here or looking down on anyone that does fan art.  This is just me explaining why I have decided to take the direction that I have.)

While I appreciate the motion,  I do not accept requests to unthemed groups.  Please don't take it personally if I decline your group invitation.  I welcome themed group invitations, regardless of quality control.

Comments

Yes, I have comments turned off.  It is for a number of reasons, but mainly because I don't have the time to manage them.  If you really want to comment on a specific piece, feel free to send me a note or comment on the gallery page.

Now Accepting Quote Requests!
Limited slots will be available starting January 15, 2014.

Go here to read my current pricing information and place a quote request.  Additionally, you may view my commissions policy here (must be read before placing a quote request).  Please do not submit commission inquiries through deviantArt as it can easily get lost.  I do not accept points as payment for commissions.

Materials and Tools

Please read the description of any piece to see what materials I used for its construction.

My maquettes are constructed using Super Sculpey and Sculpey Firm.  Some of my maquettes as well as my larger sculptures are made using Aves Apoxie Sculpt and/or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam.    I also work with Monster Clay and create molds/casts from these sculpts.

My armatures consist of household aluminum foil, as well as aluminum armature wire.  I paint with Delta Ceramcoat craft acrylic paints, using both an airbrush (for larger pieces) and hand brushes.

Also, please keep in mind that when I am responding to one of your questions, I am taking time out of my busy day to explain a technique or idea that quite possibly took me years to develop or figure out.  About 10% of the people that ask me questions acknowledge that I even answered them.  I am almost completely self taught and I learned through a LOT of experimentation.  And I still do.  While I don't mind answering questions, I do ask that you please take the time to read my tutorials and the descriptions of my pieces before asking.  I think that is a fair exchange of me taking the time to reply to your question.

Group Requests

While I appreciate the motion,  I do not accept requests to unthemed groups.  Quality control is of no importance to me, but I do not see the point of being part of a group that has no specific theme.  Please don't take it personally if I decline your group invitation.  I welcome themed group invitations, regardless of quality control.

A Note About Questions

I get a LOT of questions concerning my techniques and materials.  Before you ask me a question, PLEASE check my tutorials in my gallery to see that it isn't answered there first.  I put a lot of time and effort into those and they explain a majority of what I do.  If you have material specific questions, try googling it before asking me about it.  There is a lot of good information about sculpting materials out there that is probably a lot more detailed than what I could tell you.

I just finished distribution of the Creature Sculpt pre-orders!!  For those interested in purchasing the book, I will have my new storefront up on my website in about a week.  There, you will be able to purchase both the paperback and eBook versions of Creature Sculpt.  I will also have both versions available on Etsy.  This book is ONLY available directly through me and is not being sold through mass retailers at this time (Amazon, iTunes, etc.)  For more information about Creature Sculpt, go to emilysculpts.com/preorder!!

I am also getting ready to open for commissions again!  On May 15, I will begin accepting payments for new orders.  I will be taking a limited number of slots.  Once they are full, I will be closing again for a few months.  I will then reopen in July for more orders.  I plan on reopening every few months to give everyone a fair chance at getting a commission from me.

If you are interested in getting a custom sculpture, I recommend putting in a quote request in advance.  This way, you know the exact amount you need to pay on the day I open for commission slots and you will better your chances at getting a spot.  To read my full policy and pricing information, head on over to my website.  PLEASE do not submit commission requests through deviantArt.  I have a form on my website that sends requests to my e-mail and helps me keep organized.

Materials and Tools

My larger sculptures are made using Aves Apoxie Sculpt and/or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam.  My maquettes are constructed using Super Sculpey, a polymer clay.  I also work with Monster Clay and create molds/casts from these sculpts.

My armatures consist of household aluminum foil, as well as aluminum armature wire.  I paint with Delta Ceramcoat craft acrylic paints, using both an airbrush (for larger pieces) and hand brushes.
